Martijn Wydaeghe faces uncertain WRC future with Hyundai
Co-driver Martijn Wydaeghe has expressed growing concern regarding his professional future following the conclusion of the World Rally Championship season in Sardinia. Although Thierry Neuville and Wydaeghe secured a victory in the Sardinia Power Stage, their overall rally result was 15th place, and Neuville finished the championship in seventh.
The uncertainty stems from Hyundai Motorsport’s strategic direction. The manufacturer has decided not to develop a completely new car under the WRC27 regulations, opting instead to focus on the development of the i20 N Rally2. It remains undecided whether the team will equip this vehicle with a WRC kit for the top category, run a limited program, or prioritize customer racing.
Wydaeghe, who has partnered with Neuville since 2021, noted that he currently has no scheduled work and is waiting for clarity from Hyundai. He stated, “I am increasingly [worried]... I have tried to keep the matter out of my mind over the past few weeks, but I must admit that it is not easy.” Neuville has also suggested he may consider a reduced competition schedule next season to regain motivation.
