Martin McDonagh discusses new film Wild Horse Nine

Filmmaker and playwright Martin McDonagh recently participated in the Raúl Ruiz Chair session at the Nicanor Parra Library, where he discussed his creative process and his upcoming film, ‘Wild Horse Nine’ (2026).

Set in 1973, the political comedy follows two friends working for the CIA who take an unexpected side trip to Easter Island. The production utilized local crew members and was filmed in both Santiago and Rapa Nui (Easter Island), a special territory of Chile. McDonagh noted that the project was inspired by his long-standing interest in Rapa Nui and research into CIA interventions in Chile.

The film features a cast including Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi, Parker Posey, and John Malkovich. Rockwell and Posey praised McDonagh’s direction, with Rockwell describing him as ‘one of the best directors of his generation.’ ‘Wild Horse Nine’ is scheduled for theatrical release on November 6.
