John Malkovich film and stage projects

Overview

Actor John Malkovich is involved in several upcoming and retrospective projects. In the stage production ‘The Music Critic’, created by Aleksey Igudesman, Malkovich performs alongside live musicians in a show that blends classical music, theater, and comedy. Additionally, the Coolidge Corner Theatre is hosting a 35mm triple-feature showcasing his major roles, including ‘Dangerous Liaisons’, ‘In the Line of Fire’, and ‘Being John Malkovich’.

Malkovich is also set to star in Martin McDonagh’s film ‘Wild Horse Nine’. The film, which stars Malkovich alongside Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi, Parker Posey, and Tom Waits, follows CIA agents traveling from Santiago to Easter Island just before the 1973 Chilean coup d'état. The production has received critical acclaim following screenings at the Venice, Telluride, Toronto, San Sebastián, Zurich, and BFI London film festivals. At the Venice Film Festival, the film received a 14-minute standing ovation, and Malkovich was awarded the Volpi Cup for Best Actor. He is also set to receive the Outstanding Performer of the Year Award at the 42nd annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

McDonagh has described ‘Wild Horse Nine’ as his “most political film” to date, noting that the project was inspired by his interest in Rapa Nui and research into CIA interventions in Chile. The film, which was shot in Santiago and Rapa Nui using local crew members, is scheduled for theatrical release by Searchlight Pictures on November 6, 2026. Chilean actress Mariana di Girólamo, known for her role in Pablo Larraín’s ‘Ema’, is also part of the production. Di Girólamo has discussed the intensive process of mastering the film’s idiosyncratic English dialogue, noting that she began to dream in English as a result of her immersion in the role.
