Alzheimer's awareness and research initiatives expand in Spain and Argentina
As World Alzheimer's Day approaches on September 21, various organizations in Spain and Argentina are intensifying efforts to raise awareness, support caregivers, and advance medical research.
In Argentina, researchers from UCA and Conicet are conducting a study to identify early neurological and cognitive signs of Alzheimer's in individuals with a family history. The study aims to detect changes that may occur 20 to 30 years before clinical symptoms appear, potentially allowing for earlier intervention.
In Spain, multiple regional initiatives are underway. In Salamanca, AFA Salamanca is running the ‘Mochila Viajera’ campaign to advocate for equitable access to treatments. In A Estrada, AGADEA is organizing a theatrical walk to support those affected by dementia. Additionally, in Caspe, a multidisciplinary meeting titled ‘Alzheimer, three voices, one hope’ will bring together neurologists, family doctors, and occupational therapists to provide a holistic view of the disease progression and care.
Medical experts emphasize that while memory loss is a primary symptom, early signs can include difficulties with language, attention, and orientation. With over 4.8 million people living with dementia in Spain, these initiatives focus on both clinical advancement and the social necessity of supporting non-professional caregivers.
