Alzheimer support and advocacy initiatives in Spain

Regional organizations in Spain are implementing various community-based programs and awareness campaigns to support individuals with Alzheimer’s and their families.

In Galicia, the Afamo association has launched an EU-funded project titled “A música nas artesanías primixenias do mar,” which will host 135 workshops focused on maritime crafts and cultural memory through 2027. The Afasal Arousa delegation is also organizing a solidarity gala in O Grove and an educational seminar in Vilagarcía featuring neurological experts to provide scientific insight.

In other regions, the Association of Families of Alzheimer’s Patients in Salamanca has initiated the “La mochila viajera” campaign to raise funds and awareness. In Alt Penedès, the organization TIÁM is utilizing cinema-based campaigns, including the film ‘Un amigo para Frank’, to foster empathy across municipalities such as Castellví de la Marca, Font-rubí, and La Granada.

Leading up to World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21, advocacy efforts have intensified. In Pontevedra, the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer's Patients (AFAPO) has formally demanded that the Ministry of Health provide public funding for new treatments. AFAPO President José Manuel Fontenla stated that while new medications can improve quality of life by approximately 40%, they remain restricted to private healthcare. To support their advocacy, AFAPO is organizing a solidarity motorcycle route with the Civil Guard and various workshops. Additionally, in Alsasua, the Clínica Josefina Arregui will host its fifth annual Alzheimer's Popular March on September 20, featuring community walking routes and festivities.
