Maruli Simanjuntak appointed head of BNPPDT
Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian officially handed over the leadership of the National Border Management Agency (BNPP) to General Maruli Simanjuntak in Jakarta on Monday, October 19, 2026. This transition follows President Prabowo Subianto’s appointment of Maruli as Deputy Commander of the TNI and the simultaneous transformation of the BNPP into the National Border and Remote Area Management Agency (BNPPDT).
The change in nomenclature expands the agency's mandate to include the management of remote areas in addition to border regions. The agency is tasked with coordinating land and sea border management, overseeing Integrated Border Posts (PLBN), resolving international border disputes, and developing border zones as economic hubs.
Maruli Simanjuntak stated that the agency will focus on improving the welfare of communities in remote areas to strengthen their role as national buffer zones. He intends to continue existing programs while evaluating and expanding operations to meet the new requirements of the BNPPDT.
