Indonesia border and remote area management restructuring
Overview
Indonesia has undergone a restructuring of its border management administration. Initially, the National Border Management Agency (BNPP) focused on infrastructure development, with the appointment of Major General Edi Nurhabad as Deputy for Border Area Infrastructure Management to address connectivity issues in regions like Kalimantan and the Indonesia-Papua New Guinea border.
Following this, the agency was transformed into the National Border and Remote Area Management Agency (BNPPDT). This change in nomenclature expanded the agency’s mandate to include the management of remote areas alongside border regions. General Maruli Simanjuntak assumed leadership of the newly renamed BNPPDT, with a mission to coordinate land and sea border management, resolve international disputes, and develop border zones as economic hubs while improving community welfare in remote buffer zones.
