Maserati plans to reintroduce V8 engines in luxury models

Maserati is reportedly planning to reintroduce V8 engines into its lineup, marking a shift from its previous commitment to full electrification. Davide Danesin, Maserati's engineering head, confirmed the brand is researching the integration of a new V8 engine into existing models, though he emphasized these would be high-cost, limited-edition “emotional machines” rather than performance-driven mass-market vehicles.

The potential candidates for this engine include the GranTurismo and the GranCabrio. While the Grecale SUV is a less likely candidate, it remains a possibility. This strategic pivot follows a period of financial pressure for parent company Stellantis, which has moved toward a “freedom of power choice” philosophy after facing challenges with aggressive electrification targets.

Due to the costs of new engine development and high emission penalties in markets like Europe, these V8 models are expected to be positioned as expensive collector items.
