France and Spain evacuate 330,000 amid record wildfires
Massive wildfires sweeping southwestern France and central Spain have forced the evacuation of roughly 330,000 people from homes and holiday accommodations. In Spain, about 24,000 residents have returned to their houses, while restrictions were lifted for another 20,000 people in the Madrid region.
In France’s Gironde department near Bordeaux, around 4,000 people were moved from campsites and tourist villages as fire fronts reignited. Authorities deployed 23 aircraft and helicopters to drop water and retardant over the affected zones.
The fires have scorched roughly 77,000 hectares, an area comparable to the size of New York City, and include the largest recorded blaze in Spain, which has burned more than 50,000 hectares. Spanish government spokesperson Francisco Martín Agiré and French regional prefect Sofia Brokas confirmed the ongoing danger and the continued effort to contain the blazes.
