Massachusetts allocates $31 million for Berkshire rail upgrades

Massachusetts has allocated $31 million in its Capital Investment Plan to upgrade rail infrastructure near Pittsfield. The investment aims to expand and stabilize the Berkshire Flyer service, which currently operates as a seasonal weekend link between New York City and Berkshire County.

The project focuses on constructing a dedicated siding and upgrading existing tracks to increase capacity. These improvements are intended to reduce operational conflicts between passenger and freight trains, minimizing delays for commuters. Additionally, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) will conduct feasibility studies regarding the construction of a new platform at Pittsfield Station to better accommodate future demand.

In collaboration with freight operator CSX, these upgrades are part of a broader strategy to support regional economic growth and tourism in western Massachusetts. The modernization effort also includes the addition of new Siemens Airo train sets, funded through federal support, to provide faster and more comfortable service as the state works toward making the Berkshire Flyer a reliable, year-round transit option.
