Massachusetts rail infrastructure and West-East corridor's $
Overview
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has allocated $31 million from its Capital Investment Plan to upgrade rail infrastructure near Pittsfield. This funding is intended to support the Berkshire Flyer, a service connecting Berkshire County to New York City.
The project involves an agreement with freight operator CSX to construct a dedicated siding and modify existing tracks. These improvements aim to reduce operational conflicts between passenger and freight trains, thereby increasing capacity and minimizing delays.
Beyond supporting the Berkshire Flyer, officials noted that these upgrades align with long-term objectives to expand east-west passenger rail service between Boston and Albany.
In a significant expansion of these regional goals, Massachusetts has secured $130 million in federal funding through the Federal Railroad Administration’s Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements grant program. This funding is designated for the Springfield Area Track Reconfiguration Project, which seeks to modernize infrastructure around Springfield Union Station by separating freight and passenger operations to reduce bottlenecks.
This project serves as a critical component of the state’s ‘Compass Rail’ vision, specifically the proposed 171-mile West-East Rail corridor linking Boston South Station with Albany–Rensselaer Station. Planned upgrades include re-activating abandoned passenger platforms, upgrading signals, and adding new switches and siding tracks to improve performance for services like the Amtrak Vermonter and Valley Flyer. Construction on tracks between Springfield and Worcester is expected to begin in 2027, with a goal of operational service by 2030.
