Massachusetts Bill to Create Muslim Commission for State Appointments

Massachusetts lawmakers have introduced Senate Bill S.2134, which would establish a permanent 11‑member Muslim Commission. The commission members would be appointed by Democratic Governor Maura Healey and other state officials and tasked with identifying and recommending qualified American Muslims for appointive positions at all levels of state government, including boards and commissions.

State Senator Jamie Eldridge, the bill's primary sponsor, said, "American Muslims in my district and across the Commonwealth enrich our communities as students, healthcare workers, educators, small business owners, and civic leaders." He noted that Muslims comprise about 2‑3% of the state's population. The proposal is positioned as a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiative and is currently pending in the Senate Ways and Means Committee after clearing initial committee markups. It contrasts with the Trump administration's efforts to roll back DEI programs nationwide.
