Massachusetts Muslim Commission Bill
Overview
In late July 2026 the Massachusetts Senate moved forward with Senate Bill S.2134, a proposal to create a permanent 11‑member state commission focused on the status of American Muslims. The commission would be appointed by Governor Maura Healey and other state officials and tasked with identifying qualified Muslim candidates for appointments to state boards, commissions and other appointed positions. It would also serve as a liaison with the Muslim community, conduct research on Islamophobia, and review hate‑crime statutes.
Senator Jamie Eldridge, the bill’s primary sponsor, emphasized that Muslims make up about 2‑3 % of the Commonwealth’s population and contribute as students, healthcare workers, educators, small‑business owners and civic leaders. The measure is framed as a diversity, equity and inclusion initiative and contrasts with recent federal efforts to roll back DEI programs. While supporters argue it advances civil‑rights protections, conservatives have warned that it could create preferential treatment based on religion. The bill cleared initial committee markups and remains pending before the Senate Ways and Means Committee.
