Massachusetts rail deal aims to expand Berkshire Flyer service

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has reached an agreement with CSX to fund infrastructure upgrades in Pittsfield, aimed at expanding rail capacity and supporting the Berkshire Flyer. The project includes paying for a new siding and track modifications to reduce interference between freight and passenger trains. MassDOT has allocated $31 million in its FY 2027-2031 Capital Investment Plan for these improvements.

These upgrades are intended to facilitate permanent seasonal weekend service for the Berkshire Flyer, which connects Berkshire County to New York City. The service, which began in 2022, aims to boost regional tourism. Additionally, state officials noted that the improvements support broader long-term goals to expand east-west passenger rail service between Boston and Albany.
