Massachusetts Senate Advances Bill to Create Islamic Commission for Muslim Hiring

The Massachusetts Senate is considering Bill S.2134, which would establish a permanent Islamic commission to advise on the hiring of American Muslims for appointed state positions. The commission would consist of 11 Muslim members appointed by Governor Maura Healey and other state officials and would serve as a liaison with the Muslim community, research Islamophobia, recommend qualified candidates, and review hate‑crime statutes.

The legislation, introduced by Democratic Senator Jamie Eldridge, has cleared initial committee markups and now sits before the Senate Ways and Means Committee. While supporters argue it promotes civil rights and inclusion, conservatives have raised concerns that the commission creates preferential treatment based on religion.
