Massachusetts Senate pushes alcohol and crypto ATM reforms

The Massachusetts Senate is considering a package of changes that would make the state’s temporary summer alcohol rules permanent. The proposal would keep 3 a.m. last calls, retain outdoor drinking districts, and allow bars to serve alcohol as early as 8 a.m. on Sundays, which currently must wait until 10 a.m. Supporters say the measures would boost the local economy and help retain young residents.

Separately, the Senate moved to ban crypto‑ATM kiosks after the FBI reported that scammers stole $389 million nationwide, including nearly $7 million in Massachusetts last year. Lawmakers argue that a ban is the most effective way to stop the scams, noting that other states have already restricted or prohibited the devices. The proposed ban would make Massachusetts the only New England state to prohibit unregulated crypto kiosks.
