Massachusetts voters to decide on 2024 gun law via referendum

Massachusetts voters will decide on November 3 whether to uphold or repeal a sweeping overhaul of state gun laws, appearing on the ballot as Question 9. The legislation, passed in 2024, introduced several restrictions, including measures targeting untraceable “ghost guns,” new licensing and training requirements, and expanded access to extreme risk protection orders.

Supporters of the law argue that the regulations are essential steps toward curbing gun violence, specifically regarding suicide, domestic violence, and school shootings. They contend that tighter regulations can prevent deaths involving firearms.

Opponents, including the Gun Owners Action League (GOAL), are urging a “no” vote. They argue that Massachusetts already possesses sufficient safeguards, such as background checks, and that the law imposes unnecessary burdens on law-abiding citizens. Critics also claim the legislation may be unconstitutional and noted that the state already maintains one of the lowest gun death rates in the country.
