Mastercard and Coinbase expand stablecoin and AI agent payment capabilities

Mastercard has launched new initiatives to enhance stablecoin adoption and enable autonomous financial transactions. The company introduced a stablecoin security feature designed to help banking and finance firms detect fraudulent activities, scams, and potential sanctions violations. This tool allows institutions to evaluate risks before suspicious transactions are processed. Following a North American launch with partners such as Borderless.xyz and Keyrails, Mastercard plans a global rollout by 2027.

In a separate development, Mastercard is piloting its ‘Agent Pay for Machines’ platform, which allows AI agents to autonomously purchase digital services like computing power and data using blockchain technology and stablecoins. This system operates within spending limits set by human operators and utilizes the x402 open payment protocol. Partners in these pilots include Coinbase, Base, BVNK, Cloudflare, and Ant International.

Additionally, Coinbase and Thunes are collaborating to improve stablecoin payout accessibility. By connecting Coinbase’s payment systems to Thunes’ Direct Global Network, the partnership aims to provide recipients in over 140 countries and 90 currencies with immediate access to stablecoin payments via local bank accounts or mobile wallets.
