Mastercard and Hungarian banks launch first AI agent-led transactions

The financial landscape in Hungary is undergoing a significant shift toward autonomous and digital transactions. Mastercard, in collaboration with OTP Bank, has successfully completed the country’s first live, authenticated transaction conducted by an AI agent. This development marks a transition from AI providing mere advice to AI executing autonomous financial decisions. Other major institutions, including Gránit, MBH, and K&H Bank, have also joined this initiative.

To support this paradigm shift, Mastercard has developed a dedicated framework called Agent Pay. This system utilizes strict agent identification, invisible background tokens, and biometric customer approval, such as facial recognition, to ensure software agents do not exceed their authorized scope. This technology requires a move toward structured data, machine-readable pricing, and real-time inventory information to facilitate seamless machine-to-machine commerce.

Parallel to these technological advancements, consumer sentiment is shifting. A K&H youth index survey indicates that nearly four-fifths of Hungarian citizens aged 19–29 view mobile application payments as being as secure and convenient as traditional bank cards. Approximately two-thirds of this demographic believe the era of cash is over, with 70 percent predicting that mobile devices will replace bank cards for payments within a few years.
