Mastodon band releases vinyl records containing prehistoric fossils

The metal band Mastodon has announced a limited edition release of their album, ‘Marrow Deep’, featuring actual 10,000-year-old mastodon fossils. The ‘Bone Dust Edition’ consists of 170 copies, with interested fans required to enter a raffle for a chance to purchase one.

The project utilizes fossilized mastodon teeth that the band received as a gift approximately 20 years ago. To ensure the fossils did not interfere with the sound quality or playability of the music, researchers from the University of Georgia’s geology department assisted in grinding the teeth into a fine powder.

Produced in collaboration with Loma Vista Recordings and Waxworks Records, the band members personally participated in the manufacturing process by sprinkling the fossil dust onto the records at the pressing plant. Each $150 set includes two vinyl records and a certificate of authenticity.
