Mastodon band fossil-infused vinyl release

Overview

The heavy metal band Mastodon announced a limited edition release of their album, ‘Marrow Deep’, which incorporates authentic mastodon fossils. The project utilizes fossilized teeth that were gifted to the band approximately 20 years ago.

In collaboration with Waxwork Records, Loma Vista Recordings, and the University of Georgia’s geology department, the teeth were processed into a fine bone dust using a Spex mill to ensure they did not interfere with the music. The band members participated in the manufacturing process by sprinkling the dust onto the records at the pressing plant.

The ‘Bone Dust Edition’ is strictly limited to 170 copies. To manage interest, the band implemented a lottery system through the Loma Vista official store. Each $150 set includes two vinyl records and a certificate of authenticity. The album was originally released in August, following the death of former band member Brent Hinds.
