Mastodon to release limited vinyl containing real mastodon fossils

The heavy metal band Mastodon is releasing an extremely limited edition vinyl of their latest album, ‘Marrow Deep’, which incorporates authentic mastodon fossils. The project originated from fossilized teeth gifted to the band by a fan approximately 20 years ago.

In collaboration with the University of Georgia’s geology department and Waxwork Records, a geologist processed the teeth into a fine bone dust using a Spex mill. The band members participated in the manufacturing process by sprinkling the dust onto the wax before pressing the records.

Due to the finite amount of available bone dust, the release is strictly limited to 170 copies. To ensure a fair distribution among followers, the band has implemented a lottery system through the Loma Vista official store. The album, recorded following the death of former band member Brent Hinds, was originally released in August.
