Mat'64 'Apekop' train completes final commercial service in Netherlands
The iconic Mat'64 904 train, affectionately known as the ‘Apekop’, has completed its final commercial passenger service on the Valleilijn between Amersfoort Centraal and Barneveld Zuid. Operated by Keolis, the vintage train was hired from the Stichting 2454 CREW to provide temporary capacity while existing rolling stock underwent modernization.
The Mat'64 was the last train type built in the Netherlands, with the first models entering service in 1961. Known for its distinctive rounded nose, the model became a symbol of Dutch rail travel. Following its final scheduled runs on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the train will be returned to the Stichting 2454 CREW at the end of the year for maintenance and museum use.
