Matalascañas to implement new rock armor coastal defense
The Almonte City Council has proposed a new coastal defense project for the Matalascañas promenade to prevent future collapses caused by severe storms. The project has entered a public information period following an agreement by the Territorial Delegation of Sustainability and Environment of the Junta de Andalucía in Huelva.
The plan involves constructing a powerful rock armor slope (escollera) using stone blocks weighing up to five tons. This structure is specifically designed to mitigate wave impact and protect the infrastructure even when the dry beach disappears, a recurring issue in this coastal area.
The necessity for this urgent reconstruction follows significant damage caused by storms in January and February 2026, which exposed the ineffectiveness of the existing defenses and caused parts of the promenade to collapse. The ultimate goal is to ensure the stability and safety of the coastline and the promenade against future maritime episodes.
