Matalascañas coastal defense and promenade reconstruction

Overview

Following severe storms in early 2026 that caused parts of the Matalascañas promenade to collapse, the Almonte City Council and the Junta de Andalucía have initiated coastal defense and reconstruction efforts.

The first phase of the project involves the construction of a rock armor slope using stone blocks weighing up to five tons. This structure is designed to mitigate wave impact and protect infrastructure even during periods when the dry beach disappears.

A subsequent phase aims to extend the reconstruction work by approximately 270 meters. While initial repairs were conducted through emergency procedures to ensure immediate safety, this second stage is currently in the administrative processing and public information phase to meet standard technical and environmental protocols.
