Brazil promotes breastfeeding through Agosto Dourado campaign

Various municipalities and health professionals across Brazil are conducting activities for ‘Agosto Dourado’ (Golden August), a campaign dedicated to promoting, protecting, and supporting breastfeeding.

In Rio Branco, Várzea Grande, and Aquidauana, local health secretariats are organizing workshops and guidance sessions for mothers and families. These initiatives focus on proper latching techniques, the nutritional benefits of breast milk, and the importance of a support network involving partners and relatives. In São José, the CIAM center provides continuous support from pregnancy through the early stages of motherhood to help families navigate challenges like milk supply concerns.

Medical specialists are also using the campaign to debunk common myths. Pediatricians and obstetric nurses are addressing misconceptions such as the existence of ‘weak milk’ and clarifying that colostrum is sufficient for newborns. Experts emphasize that maternal nutrition and hydration are important, but the primary driver of milk production is the frequency of nursing. Additionally, specialists noted that mothers of twins are often capable of producing sufficient milk through the principle of supply and demand.
