Matildas set to play Germany in October friendly ahead of 2027 Women’s World Cup

Australia’s women’s national football team, the Matildas, will face world No. 3 Germany in a friendly at BBBank Wildpark in Karlsruhe on 9 October (local time) – 10 October AEDT. Germany, an eight‑time European champion and two‑time World Cup winner, is scheduled to provide a high‑level test as the Matildas build toward the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 in Brazil.

Coach Joe Montemurro said the match offers “a valuable opportunity to experience a different type of opponent” and will expose the squad to varied football cultures and tactical approaches. The teams previously met in a 2024 friendly, which the Matildas won 2‑1 thanks to a strike by Kyra Cooney‑Cross and a debut goal from Clare Hunt. Germany also defeated Australia 3‑0 in the opening match of the Paris 2024 Olympics. The fixture is part of the final five international windows before the 2027 World Cup, with European‑based players expected to be available while A‑League Women players are unlikely to feature as their domestic season starts later in October.
