Matildas international match scheduling

The Australian women’s national football team, the Matildas, is managing its international fixture schedule as part of preparations for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

In July 2026, it was announced that the team would play a friendly against Germany in Karlsruhe on 9 October. Coach Joe Montemurro noted the match provides “a valuable opportunity to experience a different type of opponent” to prepare the squad for varied tactical approaches.

By August 2026, Football Australia reported that the team had declined proposed friendly matches against the United States and Canada for April 2027. Deputy chief executive Heather Garriock stated that the April window would not accommodate the team’s specific plan to face various playing styles due to the new Olympic qualification format for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

In late August 2026, it was announced that the Matildas will face Colombia in a two-match series this November. The first match is scheduled for 28 November at GIO Stadium in Canberra, with the location for the second match yet to be determined. The series provides an opportunity to face a team that has already qualified for the 2027 tournament and offers a chance to avenge a 2-1 loss to Colombia during the 2025 SheBelieves Cup. Coach Montemurro intends to use these matches to expose the squad to different styles of play and to integrate younger players into the national team, following a developmental blueprint used by the Socceroos. Heather Garriock noted that facing high-quality opposition like Colombia is vital for the team's progression.
