Mato Grosso authorities launch Operation Muralha in 42 prisons
The Mato Grosso State Secretariat of Justice has initiated ‘Operation Muralha’, a coordinated effort involving simultaneous searches and seizures across all 42 prison units in the state. The operation began at 6:00 AM on Monday to locate and seize prohibited items, including mobile phones, narcotics, and other illicit materials.
By conducting searches at all facilities at once, authorities aim to prevent the transfer of contraband between prisons and reduce the risk of inmates receiving advance warning of inspections. The operation utilizes prison officers working voluntary extraordinary shifts. In the Cuiabá metropolitan area, specialized units including the Rapid Intervention Group, the Special Operations Service, and the K9 unit are providing support.
Justice Secretary Valter Furtado stated that the coordinated action strengthens security procedures and increases the capacity for prevention and inspection. The presence of illicit materials is viewed as a threat to the safety of both staff and inmates, as well as a facilitator for criminal activities conducted from within the prison system.
