Campo Grande starts 2026 ‘Agosto Alaranjado’ campaign to curb urban fires

The municipality of Campo Grande (Mato Grosso do Sul) launched the 2026 edition of the “Agosto Alaranjado” campaign, titled “Diga Não às Queimadas Urbanas”. Coordinated by the Municipal Committee for Prevention and Combat of Forest and Urban Fires (COMIF) and promoted by environmental engineer Letícia Urano, the effort aims to educate residents about the health, air‑quality and ecological harms of open‑fire use during the dry season. 2025 saw 1,706 vegetation fires in urban and rural areas, 834 related complaints to the Metropolitan Civil Guard and 340 reports of fire‑use for land‑clearing. The campaign provides hotlines (156, 153) and a mobile app for reporting incidents.

In Cuiabá (Mato Grosso), the mayor Abílio Brunini and the State Fire Department inaugurated the “Juntos por uma Cuiabá Sem Queimadas” operation, boosting staff, adding water‑truck fleets and equipment to respond to fire outbreaks. Officials emphasized the need for public denunciations through municipal, civil‑defence and police channels, warning of environmental crime penalties.

Rondonópolis also formalized a mixed‑brigade partnership with the State Fire Department, adding five municipal responders and training six indigenous firefighters to protect the Tadarimana Indigenous Land during the severe drought.
