Brazil deploys resources to combat wildfires and drought

Brazil is intensifying efforts to combat widespread wildfires and severe drought across several regions. In the Amazon, the federal government has approved R$ 45.2 million for 47 humanitarian assistance plans in Amazonas to address the impacts of fires and lack of rain. The state of Amazonas has seen a significant surge in activity, with over 3,000 fire outbreaks recorded in 2026—triple the amount seen in 2025. To combat these blazes, a task force of 18 aircraft has deployed 3.2 million liters of water over two weeks.

In Mato Grosso do Sul, the El Niño phenomenon is driving concerns over rising temperatures and intense heat, potentially accelerating the fire season for 2027. The Pantanal region has already recorded 166 fire events this year, affecting over 124,400 hectares. Meanwhile, in the state of Pará, the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development has approved R$ 3.9 million to support 24 municipalities facing similar environmental crises.

National authorities are also focusing on long-term prevention and international cooperation. The Ministry of Environment reported a reduction in deforestation rates in the Amazon and Cerrado, while the Tropical Forests Forever Fund (TFFF) continues to attract international investment to support forest conservation.
