Mato Grosso do Sul reports 16% drop in suicide rates

Mato Grosso do Sul recorded a 16.38% decrease in suicide cases, dropping from 287 occurrences in 2024 to 240 in 2025. This trend contrasts with the broader national and regional figures, as Brazil saw a 0.74% increase and the Center-West region experienced a 0.90% rise.

According to the Public Security Map released by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, Mato Grosso do Sul is among the states with the most significant reductions, alongside Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, and Paraíba.

Despite the decline, health experts emphasize that mental health remains a critical public health challenge. Psychologist Danillo Calixto noted that while the progress is real, continuous actions for emotional support and early identification of suffering are necessary. The data comes amid the Yellow September campaign, a Brazilian initiative focused on suicide prevention and mental health awareness.
