Suicide rate trends in Brazil

Overview

Data from the 2026 Public Safety Map indicates that Brazil recorded 16,533 suicides in 2025, a 0.74% increase from the previous year. The highest absolute volume of cases occurred in São Paulo, which saw a 2.53% increase.

Regional analysis shows a significant concentration of the phenomenon in Southern Brazil. In Rio Grande do Sul, the rate reached 13.9 per 100,000 inhabitants, which is “76% higher than the national average”. In Santa Catarina, the rate of 12.4 per 100,000 exceeded the state’s homicide rate. Of the 50 Brazilian cities with over 30,000 inhabitants reporting the highest suicide rates, 34 are located in the Southern region.

In contrast to the national and regional upward trends, Mato Grosso do Sul reported a 16.38% decrease in suicide cases, falling from 287 in 2024 to 240 in 2025. This decline places Mato Grosso do Sul among several states, including Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná, that saw reductions despite the broader national increase.
