Chikungunya cases surge in Mato Grosso do Sul amid vaccine advances

Mato Grosso do Sul is facing a significant chikungunya outbreak, with 9,961 confirmed cases and 30 deaths reported in 2026. The state's health department noted 12,520 probable cases, with Dourados and Corumbá among the most affected municipalities. The epidemic has also impacted 114 pregnant women.

In response to the growing threat of arboviruses, Brazil is advancing its vaccine capabilities. The Instituto Butantan has been authorized to produce the Butantan-CHIK vaccine, developed in partnership with Valneva. This vaccine is intended for individuals aged 18 to 59 with increased exposure risk. Additionally, the pharmaceutical company Eurofarma has submitted a request to Anvisa for the analysis of the CHIKV VLP vaccine, which is already approved in several other countries.

Health authorities emphasize the importance of vaccination and preventive measures to control the spread of the virus, which can cause long-term debilitating joint pain.
