Chikungunya outbreak and vaccine developments in MS
Overview
By the 32nd epidemiological week, Mato Grosso do Sul has seen a continued rise in chikungunya infections, reaching 10,041 confirmed cases out of 12,663 probable cases. The death toll remains at 30 confirmed fatalities, with cases spread across various municipalities including Dourados, Bonito, Jardim, Fátima do Sul, Douradina, Guia Lopes da Laguna, Itaporã, Ponta Porã, Nioque, and Corumbá. The number of confirmed infections among pregnant women remains at 114.
Dengue activity also persists. As of the 32nd week, the state has documented 1,978 confirmed cases and 4,667 probable cases. One death in Bonito has been confirmed, while two other dengue-related deaths are currently under investigation. The state’s vaccination campaign for children and adolescents aged 10 to 14 has administered 223,322 doses of the dengue vaccine to date.
In response to the arbovirus threat, Brazil is advancing vaccine development. The Instituto Butantan has been authorized to produce the Butantan-CHIK vaccine, developed in partnership with Valneva, targeting individuals aged 18 to 59 with increased exposure risk. Furthermore, the pharmaceutical company Eurofarma has requested that Anvisa analyze the CHIKV VLP vaccine, which has already received approval in several other countries. Health authorities continue to emphasize preventive measures to mitigate the spread of the virus and its potential for long-term debilitating joint pain.
