Brazil educational initiatives promote literacy through play and community engagement
Various educational and social initiatives in Brazil are focusing on early childhood development and literacy through diverse methodologies.
In Mato Grosso do Sul, the Escola Municipal Professora Leire Pimentel de Carvalho Corrêa is hosting the ‘Semana do Brincar’ as part of the ‘ABC do Brincar’ project. The initiative uses traditional games like hopscotch and puzzles to improve reading and writing fluency while reducing digital screen time. The project, led by Rafael Gloria of the Associação Cultural Nonada Jornalismo, includes distributing educational kits to 100 families and launching the book ‘O Baú de Brincadeiras da Vó Elza’.
Other regional efforts include the ‘Semana do Bebê’ in Cabedelo, which promotes rights and equity for infants, and the ‘Colo de Mãe’ program in Carpina, designed to support pregnant women in their third trimester. In Paratinga, Bahia, teachers are receiving training to use newspapers as pedagogical tools for literacy. Additionally, Cermoful is conducting a ‘Semana da Criança’ featuring a traditional joy train for students, and educational programs in São Paulo are highlighting literature and student authorship through the Bienal do Livro.
