Mato Grosso faces financial and weather risks for 2026/27 crops

Agricultural producers in Mato Grosso, Brazil, are facing a dual challenge of tightening profit margins and severe drought. According to data from the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea), the projected total operational cost for the 2027 second-crop corn harvest is R$ 6,070 per hectare, while projected revenue is R$ 5,825. This results in a projected negative margin of R$ 245 per hectare.

While the projected revenue exceeds the effective operational cost of R$ 5,508 per hectare, the inclusion of all total operational components leads to a deficit. This projection highlights the need for higher prices or increased productivity to ensure profitability.

Simultaneously, the state is experiencing its second driest start to a harvest season in 27 years. Between September 1 and October 27, Mato Grosso recorded only 186 mm of rainfall, which is 33% below the historical average of 276 mm. Data from EnsoAg/SmartCampo, utilizing NASA satellite information, indicates that 66% of the state's territory has seen rainfall more than 25% below historical averages, threatening the development of the 2026/27 soybean season.
