Agribusiness developments in Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul

The agribusiness sectors in Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul are experiencing significant shifts in production and economic investment. In Mato Grosso do Sul, swine production has grown by approximately 50% over the last three years, with the state now ranking fifth in Brazil for annual slaughter. Additionally, the state has seen a 32.4% increase in biodiesel production during the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year, driven largely by soybean oil.

In Mato Grosso, agricultural productivity remains high, with cotton harvesting reaching nearly 70% and second-crop corn production hitting a record 57.39 million tons. To support small-scale producers, the state is launching the MT Produtivo program, utilizing $80 million from the Inter-American Development Bank to strengthen family farming across 61 priority municipalities.

Amidst these developments, meteorologist Luiz Carlos Molion has advised producers to remain cautious regarding reports of a ‘Super El Niño.’ He noted that current projections are based on computer models rather than established climatic patterns, emphasizing that ocean warming alone does not guarantee significant changes in rainfall without direct atmospheric interaction.
