Amazonas wildfire crisis triggers state of emergency and federal response

The state of Amazonas is facing a severe wildfire crisis, prompting a state of emergency in 36 municipalities. Officials have identified that the outbreaks are likely the result of intentional human action aimed at degrading the biome for future deforestation.

In response, the Brazilian government has mobilized a large-scale firefighting operation. The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) has deployed two KC-390 Millennium aircraft to the region, including one equipped with the Modular Airborne Firefighting System (MAFFS) capable of discharging 12,000 liters of water per drop. Additionally, Ibama has deployed 290 specialized firefighters and six aircraft, including Air Tractor planes and helicopters, to combat active fires.

The environmental crisis has led to significant public health concerns. In Manaus, smoke from the fires has severely compromised air quality, prompting the Civil Defense to issue health risk alerts. The crisis has also sparked political debate regarding the coordination between state and federal authorities, following conflicting reports about the timing and necessity of federal assistance.

To support the local response, the state of São Paulo is sending a specialized team of 30 professionals, including firefighters and civil defense members, to assist in the containment efforts.
