Mato Grosso has two protected areas among Amazon's most deforestation‑pressured sites

A report released by the Instituto do Homem e Meio Ambiente da Amazônia (Imazon) for the second quarter of 2026 shows that Mato Grosso (MT) has two protected areas ranking among the ten most pressured by deforestation in the Amazon Legal. The Guariba‑Roosevelt Extractive Reserve appears in sixth place and the Xingu Indigenous Park in ninth place on the overall list of conservation units and indigenous lands under pressure.

Mato Grosso is highlighted alongside Pará and Acre as the states with the highest number of protected areas under pressure. Within indigenous territories, the Xingu Indigenous Park is the second most pressured area after the Yanomami Indigenous Land, while the Aripuanã Indigenous Land ranks fourth. The study distinguishes between "pressure" (deforestation inside the protected limits) and "threat" (deforestation within a 10‑kilometre buffer). Researchers call for stronger monitoring, intensified enforcement and accountability to curb forest loss, noting the repeated appearance of these territories in the rankings threatens both biodiversity and traditional peoples. The Triunfo do Xingu Environmental Protection Area in Pará remains the top‑ranked pressured site for the fifth consecutive year.
