Mato Grosso municipalities to hold territorial plebiscites

Voters in four municipalities in Mato Grosso, Brazil, will participate in plebiscites regarding territorial changes this coming Sunday, the 25th. These consultations will take place alongside the second round of the presidential election.

In Poxoréu and Primavera do Leste, residents will decide if the Nova Poxoréu community should be transferred to the jurisdiction of Primavera do Leste. In Colniza and Cotriguaçu, the vote concerns the incorporation of the Ilhas de Ocupação, part of the Nova Cotriguaçu Settlement Project, into the municipality of Cotriguaçu.

The process follows economic feasibility studies conducted by the Legislative Assembly and approval by the Regional Electoral Court of Mato Grosso. According to Gabriel Machado, prosecutor for the Legislative Assembly, the consultation is a constitutional requirement to ensure the most interested parties have a voice in territorial alterations.
