2026 elections and territorial plebiscites in Mato Grosso
Overview
During the 2026 first-round elections in Mato Grosso, Brazil, data from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) indicated that female voters had higher engagement levels than men. Female turnout reached 79.39%, while male turnout was 76.13%. Re-elected Federal Deputy Coronel Fernanda noted that the increased presence of women in politics represents an “advancement for democracy.”
On October 25, coinciding with the second round of the presidential election, voters in four municipalities participated in territorial plebiscites. In Colniza and Cotriguaçu, a proposal to transfer the occupation islands of the Nova Cotriguaçu Settlement Project from Colniza to Cotriguaçu was approved with 86.61% of the vote (17,723 in favor and 2,739 against).
In the vote regarding the Nova Poxoréu district, a proposal to incorporate it into Primavera do Leste received 74.66% of valid votes in favor. However, the results revealed a split between the municipalities: Primavera do Leste supported the transfer with 38,911 votes in favor, while Poxoréu recorded 8,150 votes against it. This discrepancy has led to a legal impasse concerning whether the change requires a majority in each municipality or a simple majority of total valid votes.
The approved changes are not immediate and must be processed through the Mato Grosso State Legislative Assembly (ALMT). The Regional Electoral Court (TRE) will officially communicate the results to the Assembly's Territorial Revision Commission to initiate the necessary legislative projects.
