Mato Grosso plebiscites approved to redefine municipal boundaries
The Regional Electoral Court of Mato Grosso (TRE-MT) has approved two plebiscites to decide on municipal boundary changes involving four cities: Primavera do Leste, Poxoréu, Cotriguaçu, and Colniza. The votes are scheduled for October 25, 2026, coinciding with the second round of the General Elections.
The first plebiscite asks voters in Primavera do Leste and Poxoréu if they favor the detachment of the Nova Poxoréu District from Poxoréu and its incorporation into Primavera do Leste. The second plebiscite asks voters in Cotriguaçu and Colniza if they favor the detachment of occupation islands from the Nova Cotriguaçu Settlement Project in Colniza and their incorporation into Cotriguaçu.
Campaigns for the “yes” and “no” positions may be organized through fronts composed of local voters and civil society representatives. These fronts can begin conventions in late August, with campaign advertising permitted to start on August 26, following the regulations established for the 2026 General Elections. If the changes are approved by the electorate, the process will return to the Legislative Assembly of Mato Grosso to establish the new municipal limits via law.
