Mato Grosso 2026 electoral processes

The Regional Electoral Court of Mato Grosso (TRE-MT) is managing several administrative, legislative, and security processes ahead of the 2026 General Elections.

The court has approved two plebiscites scheduled for October 25, 2026, to address municipal boundary changes. These votes will determine if the Nova Poxoréu District will move from Poxoréu to Primavera do Leste, and if certain occupation islands from the Nova Cotriguaçu Settlement Project will move from Colniza to Cotriguaçu. Campaigning for “yes” and “no” positions may begin through local fronts in late August, with advertising permitted starting August 26. If approved, the process will return to the Legislative Assembly of Mato Grosso to establish new limits via law.

Regarding candidate registrations, the TRE-MT concluded the period with 479 requests, a 16.55% decrease from 2022. Court President Serly Marcondes Alves attributed this to party mergers, incorporations, and political federations. Locally, Max Russi, state president of the Podemos party, announced 25 candidates for state deputy, targeting six to seven seats in the Legislative Assembly.

To manage the workload, Ordinance No. 358/2026 expanded service hours from August 15 to December 18, including weekend and holiday shifts, while suspending hybrid work for certain staff.

Additionally, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) approved the deployment of federal security forces to reinforce the elections. At the request of the TRE-MT, the Army and Navy will operate across 50 polling locations in 23 Electoral Zones, covering 30 municipalities including areas with high concentrations of indigenous territories. Judge Edna Coutinho stated the presence of the Armed Forces aims to ensure “tranquility, normality, and safety” during the first round of voting on October 4.
