Mato Grosso strengthens justice and prison systems

The Mato Grosso State Secretariat of Justice (Sejus) and the Public Ministry of Mato Grosso (MPMT) have reported several updates regarding the state's justice and security systems. Sejus presented its first-semester 2026 report to the Legislative Assembly, noting that electronic monitoring reached 89.55% of its annual goal following legislative adjustments. Additionally, the department has focused on food safety training for 55 incarcerated individuals in Vila Rica and Várzea Grande to improve meal preparation hygiene.

To strengthen the prison system, Mato Grosso has deployed 175 new staff members, including 152 penal police officers, 17 psychologists, and 6 social workers, to various regional units. Meanwhile, the MPMT has initiated the construction of its 2027-2028 General Action Plan for administrative areas and is enhancing cooperation with the Technical Official Forensic Identification (Politec-MT) to improve investigations into deaths resulting from security force interventions.

In Santa Catarina, the Penal Police force has seen a 58% increase in personnel since 2023, growing from 2,800 to approximately 4,700 officers to manage a rising prison population.
