Mato Grosso voters approve municipal boundary changes

Voters in four municipalities in Mato Grosso, Brazil, approved proposals to alter territorial boundaries during plebiscites held alongside the 2026 presidential elections.

In Colniza and Cotriguaçu, a proposal to transfer the occupation islands of the Nova Cotriguaçu Settlement Project from Colniza to Cotriguaçu received 86.61% approval, with 17,723 votes in favor and 2,739 against.

Regarding the district of Nova Poxoréu, a proposal to incorporate it into Primavera do Leste received 74.66% of valid votes in favor. However, the results showed a split between the two municipalities: Primavera do Leste supported the move with 38,911 votes in favor, while Poxoréu saw 8,150 voters against the transfer. This discrepancy has created a legal impasse regarding whether the change requires a majority in each municipality or a simple majority of total valid votes.

The changes are not immediate and must be processed through the Mato Grosso State Legislative Assembly (ALMT). The Regional Electoral Court (TRE) will officially communicate the results to the Assembly's Territorial Revision Commission to initiate the necessary legislative projects.
