Matt Dunlap Wins Maine Democratic Primary Runoff

State Auditor Matt Dunlap secured the Democratic nomination for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District after winning the ranked‑choice runoff. Dunlap received 35,924 votes, surpassing state Sen. Joe Baldacci’s 32,555 and edging out Jordan Wood and Paige Loud. The victory moves him into a November general‑election contest against former Republican Governor Paul LePage.

The seat is considered pivotal for control of the U.S. House, as the district has voted for President Donald Trump in every election while also supporting moderate Democrat Jared Golden, who is retiring. Both parties view the race as a potential swing that could affect the narrow Republican majority in the chamber. Dunlap, a former secretary of state, thanked his fellow Democratic candidates and pledged to pursue policies such as Medicare for All, affordable childcare, lower living costs, and an end to the war in Iran.
