Matt Hauser wins Noosa Triathlon after shark sightings force race changes

Matt Hauser successfully defended his Noosa Triathlon title on Sunday, despite significant last-minute changes to the event. Organizers were forced to scrap the traditional 1500m ocean swim for the first time since the race began in 1983 after drones spotted multiple sharks approximately 600m from the shore. The race instead commenced with a 5km foot race on Hastings Street.

Hauser finished with a time of 1:39:34, followed by fellow Paris Olympian Luke Willian in second place at 1:42:59. John Reed secured third place. In the women's division, Paris Olympian Natalie Van Coevorden claimed the title in her first race at this distance since the 2024 event.

Hauser, who is targeting a men's Olympic triathlon medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, noted the need to adapt to the sudden 45-minute notice regarding the race modifications. Both Hauser and Willian are scheduled to conclude their seasons in Abu Dhabi later this month.
