Noosa Triathlon shark sighting disruptions
Overview
Organizers of the Noosa Triathlon cancelled the traditional 1500m ocean swim for the first time in the event’s 43-year history following multiple shark sightings near the race perimeter at Noosa’s Main Beach. Spokesman Craig Heydon noted that while organizers initially attempted to alter the course to keep athletes closer to shore, the presence of marine life within the swim zone made it unsafe to proceed. Heavy rainfall may have contributed to the increased shark activity.
To accommodate the sudden changes, elite competitors replaced the swim with a five-kilometre foot race before proceeding to the cycling and running stages. Matt Hauser successfully defended his title with a time of 1:39:34, followed by Luke Willian in second place. In the women’s division, Natalie Van Coevorden claimed the title.
