Mattel and Netflix announce new Barbie in the Nutcracker special

Mattel and Netflix are collaborating to release a new animated television special for ‘Barbie in the Nutcracker’ to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the original 2001 film. The special is scheduled to arrive on Netflix in November 2026.

This new iteration features a modern spin on the classic story. The cast includes Barbie ‘Malibu’ as Clara and Barbie ‘Brooklyn’ as the Sugar Plum Fairy. The plot follows their adventure to rescue Ken the Nutcracker as they travel through enchanted lands and face the Rat King.

Dance legend Debbie Allen is serving as co-executive producer and choreographer, blending classical ballet with contemporary hip hop. Additionally, Tim Curry will return to the voice cast, portraying the Rat King’s Father. While the new special is upcoming, the original 2001 film is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
